I have led a bit of a weird and wonderful life, lived in many different places and had a varied career which has included writing editorials for theatre programmes, setting up a stainless steel airline cutlery distribution company (two months before 9/11 when all stainless steel cutlery was taken off airlines!!), organised promotional events and exhibitions, produced the punctuality and reliability reports for Virgin Trains, interviewed the Croatian Ambassador at the Croatian Embassy, set up a successful online store selling fundraising goods for various charities (raising over £40,000 to date) and spent ten years working at Sheffield Hallam University: first in Executive Support and then as student support for the non-standard Railway Engineering and International courses, before becoming a full time student.
This variety of roles has equipped me with excellent administration, communication and organisational skills along with a professional attitude and an understanding of the importance of being reliable and punctual. All of which have proven to be vital attributes in the film and TV industry.
I have always had a wild imagination, been a big reader and loved a wide range of films and genres. I like classic Hollywood movies but happily avoid Hollywood pap in favour of British and European films. My main hobbies outside of filmmaking are photography and travel, and I collect Hardy Boys detective novels.
I have an interest in nostalgia TV (I did consider trying to bring back Brookside as my L6 major project: tracking down original cast and using the original location!), I also think that the time is right for a resurrection of short half hour dramas under the Tales of the Unexpected brand, using it as a starting point for up and coming film makers. Sort of Channel 4's Coming Up strand meets (the excellent) Sky Arts Playhouse Presents.
My main interests are in two distinct areas; production of sports documentary and theatre adaptations.
I think I am quite lucky in recognising the career that I want to get into and have goals to aim for.
I have pushed myself forward and pro-actively sought experience in the areas in which I am interested: I am currently working for Claremont Media Group working matchdays at Rotherham United editing the live match feed, directing a multi-camera set up and vision mixing the live transmission to the stadium screens and organising the highlights for the BBC TV Football League Show. I am also producing the half hour magazine programme that will be shown pre-match and on the website. In addition to this I will be taking over the running of Eagles TV (the Sheffield Eagles match feed and programmes) from the 2014 season onwards. I am really looking forward to that as rugby is my first love.
I also work for Honey Tongued Theatre Productions filming the documentaries of production development and filming and editing the live performances. Through this contract I also work freelance for a London based theatre director adapting scripts and producing, filming and editing film versions of plays that have previously been performed on stage.
I love both the sports and theatre work and it is these areas upon which my research question is based:
How Do I Go About Becoming a Sports Documentary Producer?
